Happy Thanksgiving from Practical Art

It is officially Thanksgiving! (How did that happen?)

We hope you have a safe and wonderful day celebrating all the things you are thankful for! Here at Practical Art, we are thankful for our amazing arts community, loyal customers, fantastic staff, and (if you don’t already fit into one of the previous categories) YOU!

Now, traditionally, the Friday after Thanksgiving is reserved for Big Box stores who promise incredible deals (coupled with overfilled parking-lots and ridiculously long lines– they don’t call it ‘black’ Friday for nothing). Here at Practical Art, however, we’ve never been big fans of the chaos, mayhem, and stress of Black Friday… but we do love celebrating the holiday season in our community. So, if you are looking for something to do this weekend other than standing in line at Best Buy or Walmart, come join us at one (or more) of the awesome local events listed below, or stop by the store any day this weekend from 10:00am-5:00pm. Help spread holiday cheer while you support local businesses around the Valley.

Friday, November 25: BLACK FRIDAY!

Our featured Charity works diligently to bring arts education back into the classroom.  As most of you probably know, arts programs have been losing funding in schools across the nation. Drama programs, music classes, and fine art classes are often the first to feel squeezed by budget cuts and the increasing emphasis to support reading, math, and science. Reading, math, and science are incredibly important—but we happen to believe that the arts are too. Which is why we love the Madison Education Foundation.

The Madison Education Foundation is “committed to enriching the quality of education of every child who attends Madison public school.” How do they accomplish this? By providing innovative hands-on programs in the arts. The foundation supports music programs like world percussion, hands on art masterpiece classes, and field trips to the Phoenix Art museum and Musical Instrument Museum. They also work hand in hand with teachers to incorporate arts learning into the required curriculum necessary for student success.   As Mrs. D, a Language Arts Teacher at Madison No. 1 stated, “Art Masterpiece presentations enhance and expand the learning for both language arts and social studies. Reading standards for information texts ask students to ‘compare and contrast works of text with other media’… using the same language to discuss a photograph or painting that we use to discuss a historical document or essay.” (Learn More Here)

The Madison Education Foundation provides students with exposure and access to arts, while maintaining focus on overall student success. Their mission is close to the heart of Practical Art. So come on down tomorrow night, enjoy the tantalizing flavors of a Vonceil’s Pie (baked by our very own pie master, Karen Olson), and support this wonderful cause.

A $5 donation gets you a slice of a Vonceil’s Pies creation! A $10 donation gets you as many in-house tastings as you’d like! All donations, PLUS 10% of all sales that day, will be donated to Madison Education Foundation!

We can’t wait to see you there!

The Dynamic Duo – Black Friday & Shop Local Saturday!

Yeah, I’m not talkin’ about Batman & Robin.  I’m talkin’ BLACK FRIDAY and SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY at Practical Art!

We see so many wonderful supporters on these two days every year– people who’re venturing in to buy their first gifts of the season or to do ALL of their shopping– that we’re honestly a little choked-up at the end of the day by the enormity of what it all means.

Practical Art shoppers show up in droves those days to show not only symbolically, but concretely, that they’re committed to support local Arizona artists and our shop in it’s mission to enable that community support for those artists.

Truly: come by, this Friday or Saturday (even better? This Friday AND Saturday!), and look around at all of the skillful craft, the buzz and atmosphere of the shop, the space that we hold, and recognize your part in it. Dollar for dollar you vote for this space, these artists, and when you spread that love to other locally owned-spaces, you are crafting the city you want to live in. Thank you for keepin’ us a part of that vision.
