Happy Thanksgiving from Practical Art

It is officially Thanksgiving! (How did that happen?)

We hope you have a safe and wonderful day celebrating all the things you are thankful for! Here at Practical Art, we are thankful for our amazing arts community, loyal customers, fantastic staff, and (if you don’t already fit into one of the previous categories) YOU!

Now, traditionally, the Friday after Thanksgiving is reserved for Big Box stores who promise incredible deals (coupled with overfilled parking-lots and ridiculously long lines– they don’t call it ‘black’ Friday for nothing). Here at Practical Art, however, we’ve never been big fans of the chaos, mayhem, and stress of Black Friday… but we do love celebrating the holiday season in our community. So, if you are looking for something to do this weekend other than standing in line at Best Buy or Walmart, come join us at one (or more) of the awesome local events listed below, or stop by the store any day this weekend from 10:00am-5:00pm. Help spread holiday cheer while you support local businesses around the Valley.

I Love You Dad

Celebrate Father’s Day June 19th by finding a one-of-a-kind gift –perfect for dad– at Practical Art. Fathers, grandfathers, godfathers– they help mold our foundations– our selves. We learn who we are and who we want to become through the examples of our fathers. They deserve a day of honor, and Practical Art is looking forward to celebrating them next week!

It’s only when you grow up and step back from him–or leave him for your own home– it’s only then that you can measure his greatness and fully appreciate it.

Practical Art’s HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE (Vol.1): Geek Love!

When we were growing up, we’d never have thought it possible that being SMART and being into things like comics, sci-fi, gizmos, and robots would be the “it” thing; that being a geek would someday be cool. (Despite Revenge of the Nerds, we had remained skeptical.)

But lo! The future has arrived and it is gloriously nerdy– so we KNOW you’ll be needing at least one of these gifts this holiday season (along with maybe somethin’ from our neighbors at All About Books & Comics?):

And there’s plenty more where that came from! More monsters, more ‘bots, more quirky characters and inventive gizmos! Swing on in and ask for more recommendations! And until then, live long and prosper!

Space Boy Robot presents: “Musée des Roboddities”

Practical-Art_Thomas2014-04

“THAT’S RIGHT FOLKS! STEP RIGHT UP!  STEP RIGHT UP! THIS HERE’S THE MUSÉE DES ROBODDITIES!  GATHER AROUND AND MEET EACH IN-CREDIBLE! DY-NAMIC! EXTRA-ORDINARY ROBOT! IT ALL STARTS RIGHT NOW! THIS IS THE ONE YOU’VE READ ABOUT, YOU’VE HEARD YOUR NEIGHBORS TALKING ABOUT IT, AND HERE IT IS! COME ONE! COME ALL!”

When Space Boy Robot, a.k.a. Jordan-Alexander Thomas, declared the title of his exhibition, of course, an old-timey circus caller sprang to mind– hence, the grandiose introduction. “Musée des Roboddities” suggests a traveling trove of robot oddities, and Thomas absolutely delivers the magic. He’s the ringmaster of wildly imaginative robot sculptures based on a cadre of cultural and historical figures, featuring such personalities as “Robama”, “Marie AutoNet”, and more!

Gift Guide: Father’s Day!

Love your Dad? Love your kids’ Dad? Love somebody else’s Dad?!? Well, show that dude some love next Sunday on Father’s Day. Take him out for brunch, a bike ride, a beer, essentially just spend some of that good ol’ QT, and, if you’re into tokens of affection–fellas like gifts too!– we know Dads appreciate the useful, the well-crafted, and the thoughtful (’cause, really, who doesn’t?). Check out some of what us gals here at Practical Art have considered for our pops:

We hope you got the Moms in your life something equally as cool last month– or you got some makin’ up to do! You could even come by to pick up an original intaglio print by artist David Higgins at tonight’s reception for June’s exhibition “wire(d)”, 7-9pm. It would be an especially meaningful gift if ‘through the wires’ is how you communicate most with your Dad. (Love to Pennsylvania!)
