January’s Featured Non-Profit: Phoenix Children’s Hospital!

From the 51, it looks like a Wynn resort or new contemporary museum, and from wide-eyed children it elicits the question, “Whoaaaa……What is that place?!”  Well, kids, it’s a place of science, healing, hardship, hope, technology, wonder, and research. It’s the Phoenix Children’s Hospital. It’s our featured non-profit this month, and….

…it’s also a place of superhero window-washers.

I know, right? We’re all asking what PCH’s age limit is right now. And, well, some folks have also asked, why a “children’s-only” hospital? And the answer, from their website: “Only a children’s hospital can ensure that every staff member is focused on pediatric care. Radiology staff knows how to calm wiggly children for x-rays. Pharmacy systems are set to alarm if an unusual pediatric dosage is ordered. Staff is trained to recognize and alleviate pain in patients too young to verbalize their discomfort.” It’s a specialty task; and PCH is a stand-out, a special place in the field of pediatrics.

In 1995, Phoenix Children’s Hospital was even the first pediatric center in the country to establish a Children’s Advisory Board (Yes, that’s a board comprised of young perspectives).  Since then, CAB has been instrumental in bringing the child’s-eye view to the hospital’s procedures and facilities, contributing a multitude of suggestions that have consistently deepened Phoenix Children’s understanding of what it means to be a hospital geared towards children. Both CAB and patients have given them a lot of good advice over the years, such as:

  • ways to make procedures less painful,
  • how to make treatment rooms look less scary,
  • and how to better respect their privacy.

This wound-healing, life-saving, comfort-providing, pediatric institute is ever-expanding to meet the growing needs of Phoenix, and they need help to continue to provide a uniquely child-friendly environment with its bright colors, special artwork, and recreation spaces for kids of all ages, as well as to continue the important research that has made them a national beacon of hope in pediatric treatment.

And, when it comes to help, every little bit counts. While we may not be able to dole out fat corporate checks, we do have a supportive cadre of arts lovers, community lovers, and civic-minded locals, (YES YOU!) who, well, who happen to also love pie. Let’s see what we can do to make this equation equal a prosperous and healthy community.
