As you all know by now, 4th Friday is our Charity Pie Night. It’s the one night a month where we gather, make merry, and shovel down pie made by the very talented and wonderful Karen Olson, of Vonceil’s Pies…. and it’s all to benefit a local organization doing some local good. And it’s tomorrow!
This month’s feature charity is The Florence Immigration and Refugee Rights Project. It’s a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization providing free legal services to men, women, and unaccompanied children detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Arizona. Although the federal government assists indigent criminal defendants and civil litigants through public defenders and legal aid attorneys, it does not provide attorneys for people in immigration removal proceedings. As a result, an estimated 86 percent of immigrant detainees go unrepresented due to poverty. The Florence Project strives to address this inequity through direct service, partnerships with the community, and advocacy and outreach efforts.
Our late founder, Jane Reddin, donated her time and legal talents to this cause, and we strive to provide continued support for their mission. Whether you’re black, white, brown, purple, or paisley; a little help through a very complicated system should be accessible, especially for the youths who get tangled in the judiciary. Come by to learn a little more about FIRRP (while savoring some lovely desserts) and help us help them.
Oh, and AND we offer up a sweet item for raffle! Click this beautiful ceramic planter by Annette Weaver for a $5 ticket!
